"Toward mobile phone assisted analysis

In alignment with the college’s strategic vision and Egypt’s sustainable development goals, the
Analytical Chemistry Department had launched an innovative educational activity that merges
academic learning with technological advancement. Aimed at bridging the gap between theory and
practice, students were tasked with designing and developing cost-effective drug analysis devices
using smartphone cameras as analytical tools.

This hands-on approach enabled students to conduct real-time, accurate analyses of
pharmaceutical samples, offering a modern, accessible alternative to traditional lab methods.
Devices such as spectrophotometers and spectrofluorometers, created by students, delivered
reliable results and demonstrated the potential of mobile-based diagnostics.

The activity supported Egypt’s digital transformation strategy while enhancing students’ creativity,
problem-solving, and teamwork. Key objectives included promoting self-directed learning,
deepening understanding of analytical techniques, and preparing students for industry-relevant
tasks.
